From Berlin and Hamburg straight to Lake Constance

From Berlin you reach Lake Constance in as little as 90 minutes, from Hamburg in 95. The airport lies on the edge of Friedrichshafen, a few minutes from the lake and right next to the trade fair grounds.

From here the whole lake is within reach: Meersburg, Lindau and Konstanz by boat, Austria and Switzerland next door, the Alps in about an hour.

Arriving at the lake: water, mountains, three countries

Landed from Hamburg on Thursday at 17:10, on the promenade for the sunset. Lake Constance is worth it by the water in summer and in the mountains in winter.

Zeppelin Museum and the promenade

Friedrichshafen is the city of the Zeppelins. The Zeppelin Museum by the harbour tells their story, and the promenade in front of it looks across the lake to the Alps.
Across the lake by boat

Boats leave the harbour for Meersburg, Lindau and Konstanz. On a clear day, you see the Alps above the lake on the way.
Lindau, Bregenz and the mountains

The island town of Lindau with its lighthouse is half an hour away, Bregenz and the Pfänder just beyond. In winter the ski areas of the Allgäu and Vorarlberg are close.

One lake, three countries

Germany, Austria and Switzerland share Lake Constance. The Lake Constance Cycle Path links all three over about 260 kilometres, and the boat is quicker.

Germany: Meersburg and Unteruhldingen

Take the boat to Meersburg and one of the oldest inhabited castles in Germany. Next door in Unteruhldingen, the pile dwellings are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the museum shows them on guided tours from late March to 1 November.
Austria: Bregenz

Bregenz lies on the eastern shore, just beyond Lindau. In summer the festival plays on the stage in the lake, with “La traviata” on the programme in 2027.
Switzerland: Romanshorn

The car ferry runs every hour from Friedrichshafen to Romanshorn and takes about 45 minutes.

Over the lake by Zeppelin

Friedrichshafen is still the city of the airships. From April to mid-November, the Zeppelin NT takes off from here on sightseeing flights over Lake Constance.
Konstanz and Mainau

The catamaran takes you to Konstanz in 52 minutes, every hour. The city includes Mainau, the flower island, whose butterfly house is the second largest in Germany.

No agreed border runs through the Obersee: Switzerland splits it down the middle, while Germany and Austria treat it as shared.
1900 is when the first Zeppelin, LZ 1, rose from a floating hangar off Manzell, for about 18 minutes.
251 m is the depth of Lake Constance at its deepest point, with 536 km² of water and 273 km of shoreline.
1963 is the year the lake froze over, and a bust of St John was carried across the ice from Hagnau to Münsterlingen.

Bodensee Airport is small and easy to find your way around. You are outside within minutes of leaving the aircraft.
