Saarbrücken

Baroque, Schwenker and France next door.

From Lake Constance to Saarland

Saarbrücken is joining our network. The capital of Saarland lies right on the French border, with the Baroque Ludwigskirche, an old town full of cafés and pubs, and a cuisine in which potatoes play the lead.

Its university, research institutes and automotive industry make Saarbrücken a destination for business trips, its old town and the countryside along the Saar one for a long weekend.

  • A short flight instead of a long journey by car or train
  • Airport in Ensheim, about 25 minutes by bus R10 to the main station
  • Max Ophüls Prize film festival from 25 to 31 January 2027

Out and about in Saarbrücken

Three places for your first day in the city.

  • Ludwigskirche

Friedrich Joachim Stengel built the Baroque church from 1762 to 1775. In 2025 it celebrated its 250th anniversary.

  • St. Johanner Markt

The heart of the old town, with cafés and pubs around the square. For bars, head on to the Nauwieser Viertel.

  • Franco-German Garden

Opened in 1960 by Adenauer and Debré for a Franco-German garden show. With a 752-metre cable car, a small railway and a water playground.

Saarvoir-vivre

Saarland's cooking is big on potatoes, bacon and the grill. Four things to try.

  • Dibbelabbes

A potato dish with leek and bacon, served with apple sauce.

  • Hoorische and Gefillde

Two kinds of potato dumplings, the Gefillde filled, both with a bacon cream sauce.

  • Lyoner

Saarland's name for Fleischwurst, the pork sausage. And here it's der Lyoner, not die.

  • Schwenker

The swinging grill and the neck steak on it. In Saarland you don't grill, you schwenk.

  • The Temple Neuf in Metz on its island in the Moselle, reflected in the calm water

    France next door

By ICE or TGV, Paris is 1 hour 50 minutes away. Metz is even closer: the city on the Moselle is about 70 kilometres away, with the Temple Neuf on its island in the river.

Along the Saar

From France to the Saar Loop, the day trips worth an extra day lie along the river. You look down on the loop itself from the Cloef viewpoint.

  1. Sarreguemines Since 1997, the Saarbahn has run from Saarbrücken across the border to here.
  2. Saarbrücken
  3. Völklingen Völklingen Ironworks has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, the first ironworks from the heyday of industrialisation on the list.
  4. Mettlach Since 2016, a barrier-free treetop walk has led 1,250 metres through the forest canopy to a 42-metre tower overlooking the Saar Loop.

Did you know?

  • 2,570 square kilometres is the size of Saarland, and “as big as Saarland” is Germany's favourite unofficial unit of area.
  • 1952 was the year Saarland sent its own team to the Olympic Games in Helsinki.
  • 1957 was the year Saarland joined West Germany, on 1 January. Until then it even had its own national football team, coached by Helmut Schön.
