Hamburg: harbour, brick and beach

Landed on Friday at 14:05, by the Elbe in the afternoon. Hamburg is worth a weekend as much as a free evening after a meeting.

Elbphilharmonie and HafenCity

From the Plaza, 37 metres up, you look out over the harbour and the city, even without a concert ticket. Around it, HafenCity is growing into a whole new quarter on the water.
Landungsbrücken and harbour ferries

The harbour ferries, part of the city's public transport, leave from the Landungsbrücken, and so do the shuttle boats to The Lion King musical.
Alster and city centre

Arcades, cafés and department stores line Jungfernstieg and the Inner Alster. Early risers head for the Sunday fish market in Altona.

Speicherstadt: World Heritage in brick

Between 1885 and 1927, the Speicherstadt grew up by the harbour on 26 hectares, the largest coherent historic warehouse complex in the world. Since 2015 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with the Kontorhaus District and the Chilehaus.

The Chilehaus alone took 4.8 million bricks. Between the warehouses you walk over bridges and along the canals, right through the old port quarter.

Hamburg from the water

You do not need a tour boat to see the harbour. Ferry 62 runs from the Landungsbrücken down the Elbe to Finkenwerder in about 28 minutes, on a normal HVV ticket or the Deutschlandticket.

On foot under the Elbe

Since 1911 the Old Elbe Tunnel has led from the Landungsbrücken under the river, 426 metres long and 24 metres below the Elbe. Cars still go down by lift.
More bridges than Venice and Amsterdam

Hamburg has about 2,500 bridges, more than Venice and Amsterdam together. Some are over a hundred years old, like the Old Harburg Elbe Bridge with its sandstone gate.

1664 is when Hamburg put the Alster swans under protection, and a swan keeper has looked after them since 1674.
164 hectares is the size of the Outer Alster, and a walk around it is about 7 kilometres.
15.7 kilometres of track run through Miniatur Wunderland in the Speicherstadt, the largest model railway in the world.
